Customized Canvas Shoes – Part1 preparation

While I was out at Walmart the other day I picked up a pair of Wonder Nation canvas shoes for the little guy so we could try our hand at some customized shoes.  We like to try new things and this is something I have been wanting to do with him. At less than $6 a pair it won’t be a major problem if they don’t work out the way we want them to.

So I checked a few sites and tutorials and it would seem we can pretty much  use primer, acrylics and a sealer.. but I think I am going to maybe try and add in a few extras .. still debating the final execution. In the mean time… we prepped the shoes last night with a can of regular uncolored wall primer/paint in one that I had left over from decorating his room, Behr  from Home Depot.

We decided we only wanted to decorate the front panel so… I watered the paint down slightly and applied it with a small chisel art brush in thin coats to avoid the paint cracking.  There were 3 coats in total and that gave more than enough coverage and depth.  Once the design is on, then I may need to touch up a few spots, but I don’t think it will be necessary.   Our biggest challenge now is trying to decide on a design, to say he is being slightly over ambitious would be a major understatement lol.

I think we will pick up a few more pairs of these…

Now we have to figure out a design idea…. I think we have narrowed it down to an old Brit Cartoon that made a return as a Netflix exclusive.. not sure which version I prefer… but they are both pretty cool.  I grew up watching this after school almost 40 years ago…..and now Li’l Man D is
